विकृतिविज्ञान खण्डीय फुफ्फुसपाक श्वसनक ज्वर या कर्कटक सन्निपात सैविल खण्डीय फुफ्फुसपाक का परिचय देते हुए लिखता है:
Acute lobar pneumonia commences suddenly with well marked constitutional symptoms, such as, headache, backachè, rigor, and in children, vomiting or convulsions. The temperature during the rigor rises to 103° or 104° F. and it remains at this point for about a week. The aspect of a pneumoina patient is very characteristic the face is flushed and cyanosed and herpes often appears near the mouth. There is pain in the affected side, due to involvement of the pleura, short cough, shallow rapid breathing, and on the third or fourth day tenacious rusty coloured sputụm. The pulse respiration rate is 3 to 1 or 21 to 1 instead of the normal 4 to I. The urine is scanty and high coloured. The patient shows more and more distress, and in a short time there may be delirium, with signs pointing to failure of the cardio vascular system about the seventh or eighth day the fever as also the pulse and reshiration rate, in favourable cases terminates by crisis, falling to normal in the course of a faw hours. This is accompanied by marked general improvement the pulse respiration ratio returnes to normal and a critical sweating or diarrhoea may occur, Pseudo crises occasionally occur, but these are distinguished from true crises by the fact that the pulse and respiration do not retun to normal,
ऊपर जिन लक्षणों की ओर अंगुलिनिर्देश किया गया है उन्हें भावमिश्र द्वारा कथित निम्न सूत्रों में भी देखा जा सकता है:
मध्यहीनप्रवृद्धस्तु वातपित्तकफैश्च यः । तेन रोगास्त एवोक्ता यथादोषबलाश्रयाः ॥ अन्तर्दाहो विशेषोऽत्र न च वक्तुं स शक्यते । रक्तमालक्तकेनैव लस्यते मुखमण्डलम् ॥ पित्तेनाकर्षितः श्लेष्मा हृदयान्नाप्रसिच्यते । इषुणेवाहतं पाश्र्व तुद्यते खन्यते हृदि ।। प्रमीलकश्वासहिक्का वर्द्धन्ते तु दिने दिने । जिह्वा दग्धा खरस्पर्शा गलैशूकैरिवावृतः ॥ विसर्ग नाभिजानाति कूजेच्चापि कपोतवत् । अतीव श्लेष्मणा पूर्णः शुष्कवक्त्रौष्ठतालुकः।। तन्द्रानिद्रातियोगातॊ हतवानिहतद्युतिः। न रतिं लभते नित्यं विपरीतानि चेच्छति॥ आयम्यते च बहुशो रक्तं ष्ठीवति चाल्पशः । एष कर्कटको नाम्ना सन्निपातः सुदारुणः ॥
