आयुर्वेद में अर्बुदों और ग्रन्थियों (कोष्ठिकाओं) का वर्णन एक साथ ही आता है। ग्रन्थियों को अंगरेजी में सिस्ट (cysts) कहते हैं। हमने सिस्ट के लिए इस पुस्तक में 'कोष्ठ' शब्द का व्यवहार अधिक किया है क्योंकि ग्रन्थिशब्द से ग्लैण्ड (gland ) ले लिया गया है । सिस्टों और अर्बुदों में दोषदूष्य और स्वरूप समानता बहुत करके देखी जाती है। वाग्भट ने अर्बुद का परिचय महत्त ग्रन्थितोऽबदम् नामक दो शब्दों में दे दिया है। अर्थात् ग्रन्थेर्यन्महत् तदर्बुदम् । ग्रन्थि से जो कुछ बड़ा वह अर्बुद होता है । यह बहुत स्थूल पहचान है। क्योंकि कोई-कोई सिस्ट (ग्रन्थि ) तो इतनी बड़ी होती हैं कि अर्बुद उसके समक्ष बहुत छोटा प्रतीत होता है जैसे बीजकोष की ग्रन्थि ( ओवेरियन सिस्ट ) आदि ।
नवीन विद्वानों ने अर्बुद की जो परिभाषाएँ दी हैं उन्हें सर्वप्रथम अविकल रूप में रखे देते हैं
