શ્રી શંકર ગવાન્ ‘વિવેકચૂડામણિ’ ના આરંભમાં કહે છેઃ—— " जन्तूनां नरजन्म दुर्लभमतः पुंस्वं ततो विप्रता तस्माद्वैदिकधर्ममार्गपरता विद्वत्त्वमस्मात्परम्आत्मानात्मविवेचनं स्वनुभवो ब्रह्मात्मना संस्थितिमुक्तिना शतजन्मकोटिसुकृतैः पुण्यैर्विना लभ्यते ॥ (ભાવાથૅ− ) આ વિશ્વમાં અસંખ્ય ‘જન્તુઓ' ભર્યાં છે. પણ તે સર્વમાં ‘નર' ના એટલે મનુષ્યના જન્મ એ દુર્લભ છે જન્તુઓ+ તા માત્ર જન્મે છે અને મરે છે, પણ નર ’મનુષ્ય પોતાના આત્માને ઉષ્ટિ સ્થાન તરફ વિવેકમુદ્ધિ અને હૃઢતાપુરઃસર દોરી શકે છે, નીતિમાં રાખી—ચલાવી શકે છે. વળી ‘નર' એટલે જે મનુષ્યજાતિ તેમાં સ્ત્રી કરતાં પુરુષ વર્ગમાં જન્મ પામવા એ અધિક ભાગ્યનું ફળ છે.× ઉત્પન્ન થયેલી ભાવનાઓને સંગ્રહવાનું અને પાળવાનું કામ સ્ત્રીવર્ગનું છે, પણ નવીન ભાવનાએ શેાધી કઢિવાનું કામ અહુધા પુરુષવર્ગનું જ છે. પણ પુરુષર્ગમાં પણ સર્વને આ
