moral sympathy; ours speaking with didactic boldness as to the ignorant; his, with mystic hints and deep suggestions, as to a fraternity already taught of God, and needing but a new touch of holy light to reawaken trust and wonder from their sleep. He who instructs by indirect and figurative methods, and avoiding literal statements, delights in allusion and analogy, supposes one or both of two things; viz, that the subject is incapable of direct presentation; or, that his hearers possess its fundamental ideas, and require, not its form with their thought, but its spirit in their souls. Both these assumptions appear to me to pervade the whole ministry of Christ; to have opened his lips in parables, as the natural speech of religion; and to explain in part, why 'never man spake like this man”.
Dr. Martineau's "Hours of Thought". તાત્પર્ય કે–(૧) બુદ્ધિ એ સકલ મનુષ્ય નથી; મનુષ્યનું મગજ એ મનુષ્યને બહુ જ અલ્પ ભાગ છે, અને એ વાતને એના હૃદયને અનુભવ કરાવાય એ ઠીક છે.
વળી, ખરું જોતાં બુદ્ધિ નહિ પણ કલ્પના એ જ મનુષ્યને પશુ થકી ભેદક ગુણ છે.
(૨) કેટલાક એમ ધારે છે કે અસલ સન્ત મહએ રૂપકની ભાષામાં ઉપદેશ કરતા કારણ કે તે વખતે લખવાની કળા હાલના જેવી નહોતી અને તે માટે એ ઉપદેશને હૃદયમાં ઠસાવવા સારૂ રૂપક અને કલ્પનાનાં ચિત્રોની જરૂર પડતી. પણ વસ્તુતઃ એમ નથી. ઈસુ ખ્રિસ્ત આજ ઉપદેશ કરતે હેત તે પણ રૂ૫કની ભાષામાં જ—ઉપદેશ કરત, કારણ કે ધર્મ બહારથી ભરવાને નથી પણ અન્તમાંથી કાઢવાને છે, અને તે માટે આત્માનું જે ઉધન કરવું જોઈએ તે સીધી, બેડી ભાષામાં થઈ શકતું જ નથી.
