The edition of the Nītivākyāmsta by Pt. Pannalál Soni has superseded all the previous editions of this work. The foremost feature of that new edition is the Commentary, which by its detailed explanations, as far as preserved, and by the richness of quotations supersedes on his part the Mugdhabodhini, the Commentary of the former edition. The author of the Tikā which has no name is unknown; in the Bhūmika Mr. Nathūrām Premi concludes from the mangaláchara
ca that the name of the Commentator has been Haribala. For, such is his argumentation, the introductory verse of the Commentary:
- हरिं हरिबलं नत्वा हरिवर्ण हरिप्रभम् ।
हरीज्यं च ब्रुवे टीकां नीतिवाक्यामृतोपरि ॥ seems to be an imitation ( anukarana ) of the mangalacharanasloka by Somadeva in his Nitiv, which runs:
सोमं सोमसमाकारं सोमाभं सोमसंभवम् ।
सोमदेवं मुनि नत्वा नीतिवाक्यामृतं ब्रुवे ॥ On this latter verse the Tikākāra offers not less than five explanations, namely from the point of view of the Saivas, Somadeva being Maheśvara; of the Vaisnavas, whereby Soma is interpreted as RT; of the Brāhmanas (Soma meaning arcát); of the Jains (THETICHÅ
