ફાર્બસજીવનચરિત્ર
સપ્રમાણુ વાર્તાઓ લખી માર્કેમનું જીવન વખાણ્યું છે; અને તેવા ગુણોનું પ્રતિબિંબ પિતે જ હતા, તેથી પિતાનું લખેલું પાછું પોતે જ સ્પષ્ટ સિદ્ધ કરી આપ્યું છે. ફાર્બસ સાહેબ માલ્કમપંથી હતા. તે પંથ અથવા સંપ્રદાયના ગૃહસ્થ પરમાર્થી, વિનયી, પરોપકારી, કૃપાલુ, વિવેકી, દીનના નાથ, સર્વને પિતાના બાંધવ જેવા માનનાર, સ્વતંત્ર, તથા આ દેશનું કલ્યાણ ઈચ્છનાર અને કરનાર હતા.
રાજાપ્રજા વચ્ચેનાં કાર્યોમાં, તાત્કાલિક સ્વાર્થસાધક અધિકારીઓ ભણીથી, પ્રજાને થતા અન્યાય વિષે ફાર્બસ સાહેબના વિચાર દૂરદષ્ટિવાળા, સર્વને લાભકારક, અને યથાર્થ હતા. તે કહે છે કે –“ન્યાય કરવામાં કિશ્ચિત “પણ પક્ષપાત કશ્યાથી આપણું વિશ્વાસ ઉપર જેટલો ધક્કો લાગે, અને “તેને જે પરિણામ થાય, તે પચાસેક આખા પ્રાન્તો હાથમાંથી જાય, તેના કરતાં પણ વિશેષ હાનિકારક છે એવું માર્કેમ માનતા. અરે! આપણી જ પ્રજા સાથેના, અને બીજા માંડલિક રાજા સાથેના, આપણું કરાટેના અર્થ કરવામાં, બ્રિટિશ સરકાર અને તેના કાર્યભારીઓ કેટલો બધો પક્ષ કરે “છે; તેઓ પિતાને ફાવે એવા અર્થ કહાડે છે, કારણ કે બળ પિતાના પક્ષમાં “છે. આપણે આપણી મેળે વિશ્વાસ વિષે અહંકારની વાતો ગમે તે કરિયે,
* "He believed that if we determine a case of disputable nature in our own favour, because we had the power, we should give a blow to the existing reliance upon our faith that would be more injurious to our interests than the loss of fifty provinces. We fear that in things small as in things great, in times present as in times past, with individuals as with states, the British Government in India and its officials have too often beon guilty of-shall we call it only?-the mistake of interpreting treaties and agreements in a one-sided manner, because on that one side lay all the power. We boast, and with general truth, of our faith; but no one who has been in the habit of conversing with the natives of India, and who has the capacity of appreciating their feelings, can fail to be aware that in their opinion serious deductions should be made from the claim to unsullied integrity which we assert and that the picture would be coloured some-what logs brightly. were the lion painting the portrait of the man."
