પરદેશી આક્રમણે

હિંદની સમૃદ્ધિ તથા જાહેરજલાલી ભલભલાનું મન પણ કેવું ચળાવી નાંખે તેવી છે.
સ. પૂ. છઠ્ઠા સૈકામાં હતી પરદેશી તે આપણે આ પુસ્તકની હુમલાનો શરૂઆતમાં જોઈ પણ ગયા ઇતિહાસ છીએ; તેમજ હિંદની પશ્ચિમે
આવેલા પ્રાંતે જેને હાલ પંજાબ અને સરહદના પ્રાંત કહેવાય છે, તેને તે સમયે ગાંધાર અને કંબોજ કહેવાતા હતા તથા તે ઉપર રાજા પુલસાકીની સત્તા હતી. વળી ઈ. સ. પૂ. ૫૫૧ ના અરસામાં પોતાના મિત્ર, મગધપતિ સમ્રાટ શ્રેણિકને મળવા જતાં ઠેઠ

Ibid P. 332:-Both Neaichus (Ale. xander the Great's admiral ) and Magasthenes deny that Cyrus ever reached India= તે જ પુસ્તક પૃ. ૩૩૨; નીયરક્સ (અલેકઝાંડરને નૈકાપતિ) તથા મેગેસ્થનીઝ એમ બને ના કબુલ કરે છે કે સાઈરસ કદાપિ હિંદની સરહદ સુધી પહોંચ્યો હોય.
મગધની હદે પહોંચતાં, કુદરતી સંજોગોમાં તે મરણને વશ થયો હતો તેમ પણ આપણે જોઈ ગયા છીએ. તેના મૃત્યુ બાદ તે પ્રાંત ઉપર, પાડોશી ઈરાની શહેનશાહતના ભાગ્યવિધાતા સાઈસ ધી ગેઈટ કે શહેનશાહ ડેરીસે પિતાનો કબજે કરી લીધું હશે એમ સમજાય છે, અને ત્યાં પિતાનો સુબો–ક્ષત્રપ નીમ્યો હતો કે જેને ખંડણી નિમિતે ઠરાવેલ ઘેરણ પ્રમાણે, ઉઘરાણુ પેટે સેનાની ધૂળ-તેજંતુરી ઘણુ જથ્થામાં મોકલવી પડતી પણ હતી એમ વિદેશી ગ્રંથકાર હેરડટસના કથન ઉપરથી સારી રીતે જાણું ચૂક્યા છીએ. વળી તે બાદ ડાક-વર્ષે, તેવો જ
