The documentry evidence to this effect is of comparatively early date and apparently absolved from suspicion ...... The testimony of Megasthenes would likewise seem to imply that Chandragupta submitted to the devotional-teachings of the Sramanas ils opposed to the doctrines of the Brahmans" (?) ' અર્થાત્ “ચંદ્રગુપ્ત જૈન સમાજની એક વ્યક્તિ હતી, એ વસ્તુને જૈનગ્રંથકારેએ સ્વયંસિદ્ધ અને સુપ્રસિદ્ધ બાબ કંઈ આવશ્યક્યતા જણાઈ નથી. આ વિષયમાં લેખોનાં પ્રમાણ ઘણજ પ્રાચીન અને સામાન્ય રીતે સંદેહરહિત છે. મેગેસ્થીનીસના લેખેથી પણ માલુમ પડે છે કે ચંદ્રગુપ્ત બ્રાહ્મણના સિધ્ધાંત કરતાં શ્રમણ (જૈન મુનિઓ)ના ધર્મોપદેશનો અંગીકાર કર્યો હતો.” ચંદ્રગુપ્ત જન હતું તે બાબતમાં આટલા સચેટ પ્રમાણે મળતાં સુપ્રસિદ્ધ ઇતિહાસકાર સર વિન્સેન્ટ સ્મિથને પોતાના (1) 'Mysore Inscription' by Lews Rice, ( 2 ) 'Jainism or early faith of Asoka' Page 23.
