The singular number of the original reading प्रथमदिवसे should be taken as जात्येकवचनं and accordingly should be interpreted as प्रथम दिवसेषु. Similarly the word प्रथम should be taken to mean • earlier. ' 'Then the meaning of the compound would be fin the earlier days of the month of आषाढ. ' In this way the interpretation would help us to imply that the saw the cloud on the eleventh day of आषाढ. This is how the difficulty may possibly disappear. The second objection raised against this reading could also be answered. The word प्रत्यासत्ति need not be taken to imply अव्यवहितप्रत्यासन्नत्व necessarily. It implies only proximity of time. This proximity may be अपेक्षिक (i. e. दीर्घकालापेक्षया ). This is how, in my opinion, the reading sa need not be replaced by another reading प्रशमदिवसे . Stanza 8आबद्धभ्रुकुटिकुटिलभूतटः = with his eyebrows crooked on account of their being contracted in wrinkles. His passion, at the sight of Marubhuti, was so much provoked that, while expressing disapprobation upon Marubhuti, his eyebrows had become crooked very .much. आबद्धा चासौ भ्रुकुटिच आबद्धभ्रुकुटिः । तया कुटिलः भूतटः यस्य सः आबद्धभ्रुकुटिकुटिलभूतट: । जिह्मवक्त्रः- with a tortuous face. जिह्मं कुटिलं वक्त्रं आननं यस्य सः । क्रोधावेशात्- owing to the fury of anger. ज्वलदपघनः = with his body burning. अपघनः = body. 'अपघनः इति निपात्यते अङ्गं चेद्भवति । ' [ जै. म. वृ. ]. Though, grammatically, the word अपघन means ‘ a limb ', it is used in the sense of ' body ' by poets. अवयवावयविनोः समवायसम्बन्धादवयवग्रहणेऽवयविनोऽपि ग्रहणम् । लौहोद्धनघनस्कन्धां ललितापघनां स्त्रियं । ' ( भट्टि ७/६२ ). स्नेहोद्रेकात् - on account of exce— ssive affection. अपदृष्टि:( 1 ) whose eyesight is directed elsewhere, ( 2 ) whose eyes express ill feelings or will विरूक्षं- affectionate.
