AHINSA IN ISLAM Dr. M. Hafiz Syed M.A., Ph.D., D.Litt. Prof. Allahabad University
The fundamental principle under lying the ideal of Abinge is the recognition of one life in all mineral, vegetable, animal and human. “Not giving pain, at any time, to any beiаg in thought, word or deed, has been called Ahinsa by the great sages.”
How can a teacher of mankind, the prophet of lelam enjoy anything but Abidse on his people, when God sent bim on this earth with the express command—"And we have not sent thee but as a mercy for the world,."
The lower animals were too pot by any means exc. luded from the benefit of the prophet's all-embracing love. It is recorded of bim that when being on a Journey, be did not say his prayers untill be bad unsaddled bis camel, a piece of amiable conduct puts us strongly in mind of the famous last lines of Goleridge's Ancient Mariner:
'He prayeth well who loveth well, Both man and bird, and beast. He prayeth best, who loveth best All things both great and small; For the dear God who loveth us, He made and lovetb all.
