- Prof. Dr. Roman Rolland: Mahatma Gandhi, P. 48. उस समय धर्मतत्व लोगों की दृष्टि से ओझल हो गया था और उस की बड़ी दुदशा थी' । तीन सौ तरेसट प्रकार के धर्म प्रचलित थे । नदी, नालों, पहाड़ों तथा सूरज और चाँद को देवीदेवता मानकर पूजा जाता था । चारों तरफ मिथ्यात्व रूपी अंधेरा छा रहा था । सारे संसार में हा हाकार मचा हुआ था । हिंसा को हिंसा, पाप को पुण्य और अधर्म को धर्म कहते थे । जनता धर्म के असली रूप को भूल गई थी । ऐसी महाहिंसक स्थिति में जो वीर अहिंसा स्थापित करे वही सच्चा महावीर है i संसार के समस्त प्राणियों का जीवन महादुःखदायी था । ऐसे महा भयानक समय में भगवान् महावीर का जन्म हुआ । सामाजिक दुःस्थिति
