ન્યાયકુસુમાંજલિ.
પ્રથમNotes : -Every Tirthankara when he is born is taken to Meru, the mountain of gods, by the Indras as it is a custom with them to bathe him with holy water. Accordingly, when Lord Mahavira was taken for the same purpose, Saudharmendra, thinking that he being just born, would be unable to bear the heavy flow of water, hesitated to perform the usual ceremony. Lord Mahavira realising this by Avadhi--Jnana showed his superhuman power by shaking the Meru mountain with his toe. Seeing this, the Indra with great admiration gave him the epithet of Mahavira' and performed the ceremony. ભગવાનનું નામકરણ–
જમ્યા પછી તરતજ જે બાળપ્રભુએ પિતાના પગને અંગુઠે દબાવીને મેરૂપર્વતને કંપાવ્યો હતો અને આવી રીતનું જેમનું અકિક બળ જોઈને, ઇન્દ્ર અતિશય હર્ષ અને આશ્ચર્ય સહિત, જેમને “મહાવીર એવું નામ આપ્યું હતું, તથા તે નામને જેમણે સર્વ આભ્યન્તર શત્રુઓને સંહાર કરી સાર્થક કર્યું, તે “વીર” પ્રભુને હું આશ્રય લઉં છું.”—૨
સ્પષ્ટીક મેરુપર્વત પર “મહાવીર ભગવાનના જલાભિષેક સમયે ઇન્દ્રને શંકા થઈ હતી કે આ હમણાનું જન્મેલું બાળક આ પ્રચંડ જળનો ધેધ કેમ સહન કરશે. આથી ઈન્દ્ર જલાભિષેક કરતાં અચકા. આ વાત ત્રિજ્ઞાન પ્રભુએ જાણું અને તેમણે પિતાના પગના અંગુઠાથી મેરૂને ચાં, એટલે તરતજ તે કમ્પી ઉઠય. આ પ્રકારનું પ્રભુનું અસાધારણ બળ જોઈને ઇન્દ્ર પ્રભુનું “મહાવીર’ એવું નામ પાડયું. આ નામને મહાવીરસ્વામીએ ક્રોધ, માન, માયા, લોભાદિક આન્તરિક શત્રુઓને પરાજય કરી સાર્થક કર્યું. भगवतः परिव्रज्या
पित्रोः प्रेम परं विबुध्य निजके गर्भस्थलेऽभ्यग्रहीद् दीक्षां तद्विरहे तदापि सदने ज्येष्ठस्य चात्याग्रहात् ।
