The word the Jains use for soul is (jiva) which means life and there is much analogy between many of the expressions they use and the view that the ultimate substances which come into direct contact with the minute souls in everything and their be:t known position in regard to the points most discussed in Philosophy is syadvad the doctrine that they may say yes and at the same time no to everything. You can affirm the certainty of the world for instance from one point of view and at the same time deny it from another or at different times and in different connections you may one day affirm it and another day deny it." ' અર્થાત્ એ વાત હવે પૂર્ણપણે નિશ્ચિત થઈ ગઈ છે કે જૈન સમાજ ખરી રીતે બુદ્ધના સમયથી પણ પૂર્વેને છે અને તેમના સમકાલીન મહાવીર સ્વામી કે જેમનું નામ વર્ધમાન હતું, તેમની મારફતે ખ્યાતિમાં આવ્યા છે. વળી એ પણ સ્પષ્ટ રીતે માલુમ પડે છે કે જેને ના મુખ્ય અને મહત્વના વિષયમાં તેમની રહેણી કરણ તથા વિચાર બદ્ધાના વિચારો વિગેરેથી તદ્દન જુદાં પડે છે. આ બંને સમાજ એટલે કે જૈન તથા ઔદ્ધ શરૂઆતથી તદ્દન સ્વતંત્ર નહિ પરંતુ પરસ્પર વિરોધી છે. જૈન માત્ર મનુષ્ય અથવા પશુઓમાં જ નહિ, પરંતુ તમામ વનસ્પતિ, પૃથ્વી, પાણી (જ્યારે ઠંડું હોય ત્યારે), અગ્નિ તથા વાયુમાં તેમની છે આ હિ પરંતુ તમામ કાર્ય
