Digambara Tradition (1) Jala (Water) Puja (2) Candana (Water which is coloured by sandal wood) Puja (4) Puspa ( Rice coloured by sandal wood) Puja (5) Naivedya (Small pieces of white coconut) Puja (6) Dipa (Coloured pieces of coconut) Puja- It is a symbol of Dipaka (7) Dhupa (Incense) Puja (8) Fala (Dry Fruits) Puja Note : Before starting puja, they perform Jalabhisheka or Prakshala of Idol and then Asta Prakari Puja. After offering fruits, they offer Arghya (mixture of all the eight materials). First of all they worship Deva, Sastra and Guru, after then worship by adoration (Jaimala) is performed. At the end, they read santipatha and Visarjanapatha. Some Digambaras (Bisapanthi) use green fruits, flowers and sweets also. They also perform abhisheka by sandal wood, mixed water, curd, milk etc. but other Terapanthi) use only pure water. This bathing water is called Gandhodaka ( holy water) and they touch this holy water on their foreheads and faces too. Having performed all these worships, they end with Arati. Other special Pujas (a) Navagraha Puja (b) Ratnatraya Puja (e) Pancameru Puja (d) Siddhacakra Puja (e) Tirthankara Puja (f) Indradhvaja Puja (g) Santinatha Vidhana Puja (i) Dasha Laksana Puja Objectives of worship (puja) in both traditions Now we are going to discuss the objectives of puja. These areJala (Water) Puja-To remove all the karmas and impurities from soul or to get rid oneself of the cycle of birth and death. Candana (Sandal-wood) Puja-To make our soul tranquil (calm) or to subside the suffering of the world (Samsaratapavinasanaya). Puspa (Unbroken flowers) Puja- To live like flowers, full of love and compassion to all worldly living beings or to conquer our sexual desires and passions which are the root cause for the accumulation of karmas. Dhupa (Incensed) Puja- To destroy the bad odor (smell) or false faith (mithyatva) and to manifest our pure soul or to destroy all the eight karmas. Dipa (Lamp) Puja- To attain the knowledge in the form of kevalajnana (omniscience) or to destroy the darkness of ignorance and false belief 280
