________________ tion. Idol worshippers of both the Jain sects (Digambara and Svetambara) perform their pujas. Though their methods of puja differ to some extent yet their aim is similar. In both traditions puja is the most important ritual. According to Svetambara tradition worship is offered in three different ways(1) First worship is called Anga-Puja, this is done by anointing for different path of an idol or Arihanta with water, sandal wood and flowers. (2) Second worship is called Agra-Puja, which is done by placing, incense, lamp, rice, fruits and sweets in front of idols. (3) Third worship is Bhavapuja, which is done by Caitya Vandana. Note : The first and second worships are called Draya Puja (Material Worship). These two pujas collectively together are called Asta Prakari Puja. The Asta Prakari Puja is done by offering eight different types of substances. Jain puja symbolizes various aspects of our religion. There are different types of puja being performed at the occassion of various religious ceremonies. The following eight materials are used in performing pujas in both traditionsSvetambara Tradition (1) Jala (Water) puja (2) Candana (Sandal wood) puja (3) Puspa (Flower) puja (4) Dhupa(Incense) puja (5) Dipaka(lamp) puja (6) Aksata (Rice) puja (7) Naivedya (Sweets) paja (8) Fala (Fruits) puja Note : Other functions are - (1) Darpana (Mirror) puja : Jains see the reflection of the idol on the mirror by turning their own neck. At that time they think that the God is reflecting in their heart. (2) Camvara puja (3) Fan puja (4) Vandana / Bhava puja (5) Arati puja-Specially performed in evening, symbolizing the joy after performing all religious activities. It destroys all karmas and brings happiness. Other Special puja (a) Snatra puja- It symbolises bathing of the new born Tirthankaras by gods and goddesses over Meru Mountain. It is always performed prior to any puja. This is birthday celebration of God. Digambars perform this worship daily. (b) Panca kalyanaka puja (Garbha, Janma, Diksha, Jnana, Nirvana) (c) Nava pada puja (Five Parmeshthi, Ratnatraya and Tapa). (d) Baraha vrata puja (Twelve vows). 279
