USE PROPER TERM OF ADDRESS
20. If at all an ascetic has to address men he should
observe his attributes and should call him by his popular
name or clan name or any other suitable term of address once
or more keeping in mind its merits and demerits.

२१ : पंचिंदियाण पाणाणं एस इत्थी अयं पुमं । जाव णं न विजाणिज्जा ताव जाइ त्ति आलवे ॥
पंचेन्द्रिय प्राणियों के विषय में, जव तक यह स्त्री है अथवा यह पुरुष है इस प्रकार निश्चय न हो जाय, तब तक भाषा - विवेकी साधु को केवल जाति का आधार लेकर ही वोलना चाहिए, यथा - गाय की जाति, कुत्ते की जाति आदि ॥२१॥
21. About a five sensed being, as long as the ascetic, who follows the code of language, is not certain about its sex he should call it by the name of its species. For example-a bovine animal instead of cow and a canine instead of dog.

२२ : तहेव माणुसं पसुं, पक्खिं वावि सरीसिवं । थूले मेइले वझे पायमित्ति य नो वए ॥
२३ : परिवुड्ढे त्तिणं बूया बूया उवचिअ त्तिय । संजाए पीणिए वा वि महाकाय ति आलवे ॥
इसी प्रकार मनुष्य, पशु, पक्षी एवं सर्प आदि को देखकर, ऐसा कभी न कहे कि यह मोटा है, यह पेटू है, यह वध करने योग्य है अथवा यह पकाने योग्य है॥२२॥
उसके विषय में आवश्यकतावश बोलना ही पड़े तो " यह सब प्रकार से पूर्ण है, यह परिपुष्ट है, यह संजात (युवा) है, यह प्रीणित (तृप्त) है, यह महाकाय है" इस प्रकार विचारकर निर्दोष व शालीन भाषा का प्रयोग करना चाहिए ॥ २३ ॥ 22, 23.
