(39) Acharyashri Atmaram ji M. further explains-“A benevolent soul should first of all avoid any chances of rise of these passions. If at all he faces some such situation, he should check and pacify the rise of these passions with the help of tranquility, humbleness, simplicity and contentment." ४० : कोहो अ माणो अ अणिग्गहीया माया अ लोभो अ पवड्डमाणा।
चत्तारि ए ए कसिणा कसाया सिंचंति मूलाई पुणब्भवस्स॥ अनिगृहीत (जिस पर नियंत्रण नहीं लगाया हो) क्रोध और मान तथा बढ़ता हुआ माया और लोभ ये चारों ही कठिन उग्र कषाय पुनर्जन्म रूप विष-वृक्ष की
जड़ों का सिंचन करने वाले हैं॥४०॥ ___40. Unbridled anger and conceit and ever growing deceit and greed, these four tough and intense passions are the nutrients for the poison-tree that is the rebirth-cycle. विशेषार्थ : ___श्लोक ४0. कसाया-कषाय-कष' का अर्थ है संसार। जिस वृत्ति से संसार की अर्थात् जन्म-मरण की वृद्धि हो; आय हो, उस वृत्ति को कष + आय = कषाय कहा जाता है। कषाय शब्द क्रोध, मान आदि भावों से सम्बन्धित है। शब्दशास्त्र के अनुसार 'कषाय' शब्द से चार अर्थ सूचित होते हैं-गेरुआ रंग, लेप, गोंद और भावावेश। क्रोधादि भाव रंग है, इनसे आत्मा रंजित या मलिन होती है। ये लेप हैं, आत्मा पर कर्म-रज का लेप चढ़ता है। इन भावों में ग्रहणशीलता संपृक्तता है, इनके कारण आत्मा पर कर्म-परमाणु चिपकते हैं। ये भावावेश हैं इनके उदय से मन का स्वाभाविक संतुलन बिगड़ जाता है। इस प्रकार कषाय शब्द के चारों ही अर्थ आत्मा व कर्म के सम्बन्ध को बनाने वाले हैं। ELABORATION: ___ (40) Kasaya-Kash means this world or the mundane life and aaya means income or addition. The attitude or the activities that multiply or supplement the cycles of rebirth is called kashaya. Popularly it means passions and covers anger, conceit, etc. The literal meanings of kashaya are-ochre color, unguent or ointment,
