गुरुदेव के एक बार या बार-बार बुलाने पर बुद्धिमान् शिष्य अपने आसन पर से ही आज्ञा सुनकर उत्तर नहीं देवे, किन्तु आसन छोड़कर विनयभावपूर्वक गुरु की आज्ञा को सुने और फिर तदनुसार समुचित उत्तर देवे॥२०॥ ___20. When a guru calls a disciple, once or many times, an able disciple should not reply from where he is sitting. Instead, he should get up, go near the guru, listen to what the guru wants to say, and then only should give a suitable reply.
२१ : कालं छंदोवयारं च पडिलेहित्ताण हेउहिं।
तेण तेण उवाएण तं तं संपडिवायए॥ शिष्य का कर्तव्य है कि विभिन्न विविध हेतुओं से द्रव्य, क्षेत्र, काल आदि भावों को तथा गुरुओं के मनोगत अभिप्रायों को एवं सेवा-आराधना करने के समुचित साधनों और विधियों को भली प्रकार जान करके उन उपायों से उन प्रयोजनों को पूरा करे॥२१॥
21. It is the duty of a disciple to evaluate from various different angles the parameters of matter, space and time, understand the expectations and commands of the gurus, know all the means and methods of serving available to him and integrating all this information he should proceed to accomplish the expected. विशेषार्थ :
श्लोक २१. कालं-काल-यहाँ काल में समय, पदार्थ व क्षेत्र आदि भावों का समावेश है। जैसे-ऋतु के अनुरूप भोजन, शय्या, आसन आदि लाना।
छंद-आचार्य का अभिप्राय या इच्छा।
उवयारं-अगस्त्यचूर्णि में इसका अर्थ 'आज्ञा' किया है। जिनदासचूर्णि में विधि तथा टीका में आराधना का प्रकार बताया है।
