name Jnataputra. According to Panini, the grammarian, gotra means progeny and therefore the descendents of a famous or illustrious man use his name as gotra or clan name. In the Sthanang Sutra there is a mention of seven gotras–Kashyap, Gautam, Vatsa, Kutsa, Kaushik, Mandan and Vashisht. In the Vedic literature gotra is defined as a group of people having blood relations with each other and some particular person.
If one remembers the name or the clan name of a person he should use that as the term of address. If not he should use some term representing the person's virtues or attributes that is proper and not offending. For example--Beloved of gods! Revered one! etc. १८ : अज्जए पज्जए वा वि बप्पो चुल्लपिउ त्ति य।
माउलो भाइणिज्ज ति पुत्ते नत्तुणिअ त्ति य॥ १९ : हे हो हले ति अन्ने त्ति भट्टे सामिय गोमिए।
होल गोल वसुलि ति पुरिसं नेवमालवे॥ संसार में लोक व्यवहार को जानने वाले विचारवान मुनि, पुरुष के साथ भी, हे आर्यक (दादा), प्रार्यक (परदादा) पिता, चाचा, मामा, भानजा, पुत्र, पौत्र, हल, अन्न, भट्ट, स्वामिन्, गोमिन्, होल, गोल, वसुल इत्यादि रागवर्द्धक और द्वेषवर्द्धक अयोग्य सम्बोधनों से वार्तालाप नहीं करें।।१८-१९॥ ___ 18, 19. Those intelligent monks who know the ways of the world do not use derogatory or flattering terms as mentioned above (verse 16) even when they talk to men. उपयुक्त सम्बोधन करें
२0 : नामधिज्जेण णं बूया पुरिसगुत्तेण वा पुणो।
जहारिहमभिगिज्झ आलविज्ज लविज्ज वा॥ यदि आवश्यक होने पर कभी किसी पुरुष से बोलना हो तो उसके प्रसिद्ध - नाम से या उसके प्रसिद्ध गोत्र से या किसी उपयुक्त सम्बोधन से, गुण-दोषों का
विचारकर, एक बार अथवा बारंवार बोला जा सकता है॥२०॥
