चित्रक्रम १९ : महाकाल श्मशान में ध्यान तथा महाउपसर्ग __ दृश्य १-दीक्षा लेकर दिन के तृतीय प्रहर में मुनि गजसुकुमाल महाकाल श्मशान में जाकर एक रात्रि की महाप्रतिमा धारण कर ध्यानस्थ हो गए। श्मशान में कहीं चिताएँ जल रही हैं। कहीं नरमुंड पड़े हैं। इधर-उधर हिंसक माँसाहारी जानवर घूम रहे हैं। सोमिल विप्र यज्ञ की सामग्री साथ लिये, उधर से गुजरा तो उसने गजसुकुमाल को मुनि रूप में देखा। वह क्रोध में पागल हो उठा-“इसी राजकुमार ने मेरी प्यारी पुत्री सोमा को बिना विवाह किये मझधार में छोड़ दिया है तो मैं भी अब इसका वदला लूँगा।"
दृश्य २-बदले की भावना से प्रेरित होकर सोमिल ने ध्यानस्थ मुनि के सिर पर गीली चिकनी मिट्टी की पाल बाँधी, फिर पास में ही जलती चिता से धधकते अंगारे लिये और मुनि के सिर पर धर दिये। मुनि का मस्तक
और शरीर जलने लगा। मुनि फिर भी शांत, अचल खड़े रहे। सोमिल है भयभीत हुआ-'कहीं यह दुष्कृत्य करते मुझे किसी ने देख लिया और वासुदेव श्रीकृष्ण को पता लग जायेगा तो. " वह उलटे पाँव नगर की ओर भागा।

Scene 1. Accepting consecration in the third praharu (3 p.m.) of day, monk Gajasukumala, accepting the great monk resolution approached the Muhäkāla funeral place and went deep into meditation. Somewhere in cemetry, pyres are burning, somewhere are half burnt and unburnt corpses, flesh eater and violent animals are wandering hither and thither. Brāhmuna Somilu passed by that cemetry. Then he saw Gajasukumāla as a sage. He became mad in fury-“This prince has bereaved my dear daughter, without marrying her. I shall also take revenge.''
Scene 2. Instigated by the feelings of revenge Somila put wet clay on the head of monk and then taking burning coals from a pyre, kept them on the head of the monk. The head and body of monk hegan to burn, still he stood erect and calm. Somila was frightened--Lest any man may see him doing this evil deed; and that Vasudeva Sri Krsnu might become aware i of this, then....'' He ran away towards the city.
