As soon as my work on the Typical Selec. tions in Prakrits for the Calcutta University is over I am proposing to plan a new and critioal edition of the whole of the Jain Canonical works and the Niryuktis. I have discuseed this item with Prof. Jacobi and he has assured me his advice whenever I seek it. So far three different editions of Jain works have been published & yet none of them are available & none of them Scientific & Critijal. Though the Agamodaya Samiti edition is much better, it was planned for Jain monks and not for philo. gists who want the edition budly. Some stray books edited by European Scholars are very use. ful to them but even these are now rare. If a critical edition is designed. I think it will not be banned by the Jain monks, but would be of great service to the students of Modern Uni. versities and of religion and philology.
I felt this difficulty when I had to teach Ardha Magadbi to my students. To state a particular case, Rayapaseniyaentta is appointed for the next year in our University the long promised edition of Agamodaya Samiti is not forth coming, and even if it is published. I am
