________________ they do in all such cases. He also made over to me the copy. right. Impelled by his zeal, I resolved at any sacrifice to carry the enterprise through. Gujarati would I certainly do; but I must have Sanskrit too done anyhow. At this time I also felt a desire for Marathi, Bengali, Hindi and Tamil translations. To a mere student all this appeared to be a great enterprise. But I said to myself, my soul, no merit so great as of devoting a part of this brief life to such an enterprise. Hiding this hope within mine own heart for the time, I set about arranging for the Gujarati translation. My great want was of leisure and of knowledge. This frightened me a good deal for a time. It felt to be a very hard task in the beginning. I had not the courage to take up pen and paper--oh, when will it all be, over?—I kept repeating to myself full of misgivings. On second thoughts it struck me that the best course, would be to hand over the work to another for a consideration, and to publish it afterwards. But where were the funds to come from? Fortunately, I opened my heart to my friend, Mr. Navroji Mancherji Mobedjiná. He suggested reassuring means. We two arranged to have our translations published in some periodical by instalments, which we might collect for final publication when I had the means. Mr. Navroji took up the first two Lectures (IV & V.) I now sallied forth in search of a periodical, but could find no encouragement in any quarter. The best hope a friend could hold out was "We shall try to give select extracts from your translations”. This concession was not sweet enough to be swallowed. • It now remained to us to fall back upon the tender mercies of the public. The Bombay public do not care much for this sort of work.; but I felt assured that the public, who had supported an author like myself, would not despise these noble dessertations of Max-Müller'8. I therefore first put the matter before a few sympathising European friends; and it soon met Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Umara, Surat www.umaragyanbhandar.com
