Sato and apašu represent side by side the two equivalents o and u for the termination ann, so oftea ascertained in this Ms. Ji and ja are spellings entirely equivalent; it can be ascertained by our ji being in the place of ja in the two verses which contain them. 6. This is the character which I read bh. 19 ya ja vaşasata jiv. apašu dhamu utamu m.huta jivita .e.hu pasatu dhamu utamu Cf. The sloka of six paidas of the Pdli appears in our manuscript under the form of a regular double sloka ; the third and fourth padas develop the idea contained in the first two. I dare not propose anything to fili up the gap of three syllables. The reading jatu of our Ms. suggests instead a correction for the Pali text, which appears to me to be certain. Jantum has only been explained as =jantu, a nominative, by some unacceptable devices. It is jātn that should be read in the PAli, and understood here.
