“તેમનો વિહાર ઘણા મોટા વિરતારમાં થયો હોય એમ જણાય છે; પ્રસંગે તેઓ મગધની રાજધાની રાજગૃહ અને બીજું શહેરમાં પધારતા, જ્યાં તેમને અપૂર્વ માન
ળતું હતું. આ ઉપરાંત તેમના પિતાના સમયમાં જૈન ધર્મમાં મતભેદ પડી જવા છતાં પણ જૈનની માન્યતા પ્રમાણે મહાવીરના અનુયાયીઓની સંખ્યા કેઈપણ રીતે ઓછી ન હતી. તેમના સંઘમાં ૧૪,૦૦૦ શ્રમણ, ૩૬,૦૦૦ શ્રમણીઓ, ૧,૫૯,૦૦૦ શ્રાવકે અને ૩,૧૮,૦૦૦ શ્રાવિકાઓ તેમજ ૫,૪૦૦ જેટલા બીજા શિષ્ય હતા, જે ચૌદપૂર્વના જ્ઞાતા અથવા શ્રુતકેવલી હતા.
પારસનાથની ટેકરી પાસે બાજુ પાલિકા નદી પર આવેલ જંભિકા ગામમાં વર્ષની ઉમરે કેવલી થયા પછી અને જૈન ધર્મના સુધારક તરીકે ૩૦ વર્ષ ભ્રમણ કર્યા પછી મહાવીર રાજગૃહ પાસે પાવાપુરીમાં હતિપાળ રાજાની પિશાલમાં ૭૨ વર્ષની ઉમરે નિર્વાણ પામ્યા. આજે પણ જેન યાત્રાળુઓ હજારોની સંખ્યામાં તે જગ્યાએ જાય છે. જેના કાલગણના પ્રમાણે આ પ્રસંગ ઈ સ. પૂર્વે પર૭ માં બન્યું ગણાય છે અથવા સિલેનની કાલગણના પ્રમાણે બુદ્ધના નિર્વાણ પછી સોળ વર્ષ અથવા ઈ. સ. પૂર્વે ૫૪૩. આ સાલ ઘણા ઐતિહાસિક પુરતુંકે અને ટીકાગ્રંથમાંના ત્રણ લોકેપર અવલંબિત છે. “આ કોનું મૂળ કેઈપણ જગ્યાએ સ્પષ્ટ મળતું નથી, પણ તે ઘણું ટીકાગ્રંથમાં અને ઐતિહાસિક પુસ્તકમાં લેવામાં આવે છે. તે વીર અને વિક્રમના eighth Tirthankara Candraprabha of the Jainas. 5. Papa-Pavapuri, about seven miles to the south-east of Bihar( town ) and two miles to the north of Giriyek. According to Stevenson's Kalpa-Sutra, Mahāvira died here while he was spending the Paryushana (Pajjusana ) at the palace of Hastipala, king of Papā.
