૨૫ નિયમન માટે સર્વસાધારણ નિયમ એ છે કે એક જ વસ્ત્રથી ચલાવી લેવા પ્રયત્ન કરે અને તેમ ન ચાલે તે બે વસ્ત્ર રાખી શકાય.'
આમ તપશ્ચર્યા અને ધ્યાનમાં ગાળેલાં બાર વર્ષ નિષ્ફળ નહોતાં ગયાં. “તેરમા વર્ષ..., જૂના મંદિરની પાસે......, શાલવૃક્ષની નીચે એક ધ્યાને રહેલા મહાવીર સર્વશ્રેષ્ઠ કેવલજ્ઞાન પામ્યા જે અનંત, સર્વોત્તમ, અબાધિત, અવિચ્છિન્ન અને સંપૂર્ણ છે.”ર
આત્મસાક્ષાત્કારની તૈયારીનાં બાર વર્ષ વર્ધમાન ઘણી જગ્યાએ વિચર્યા જેમાંનાં ઘણુંખરાં સ્થળે આજે શોધી કાઢવા મુશ્કેલ છે. જંગલી જાતિઓથી વસેલ દેશમાં ભ્રમણ કરતા, કયાંક એકાદ રાત્રિ વિસામે કરતા અને રાઢ નામના જંગલી લેકેથી વસાયેલ પ્રદેશમાં વિચરતા વિચરતા તેમને નિર્દય લોકોએ બહુજ દુઃખદ અને ભયાનક પરીસહ કર્યા ૩ ત્યાર પછી સર્વજ્ઞ, સર્વ વિષયેના જ્ઞાતા, કેવલી અને આ જગતમાં કાંઈપણ ગુપ્ત ન હોય તેવા અહંત તરીકે તેઓ પ્રસિદ્ધ થયા. આ સમયે તેમની ઉમર, ૪૨ વર્ષની હતી અને જીંદગીનાં બાકીનાં ત્રીશ વર્ષ તેમણે પિતાની ધર્મપ્રણાલી શિખવવામાં, સાધુસંઘ વ્યવસ્થિત કરવામાં અને પિતાનાં સિદ્ધાંતના પ્રચારાર્થે ભ્રમણ કરવામાં તથા સ્વધર્મમાર્ગી બનાવવામાં ગાળ્યાં. મગધ અને અંગદેશનાં રાજ્યમાં આવેલાં ઉત્તર અને દક્ષિણ બિહારનાં લગભગ બધાં શહેરોમાં તે વિચર્યા. તેમનાં ઘણુંખરાં ચાતુર્માસ તેમની જન્મભૂમિ વૈશાલી, મગધની જુની રાજધાની રાજગૃહ, પ્રાચીન અંગેની રાજધાની ચંપા, વિદેહની રાજધાની મિથિલા અને શ્રાવસ્તીમાં થયાં હતાં.
