ઉત્તર હિંદરતાનમાં જૈનધર્મ
થયેલ સ્કંદગુપ્તના કહાઉમ શિલાતંભ પર છે. કહાઉમ ગામની ઉત્તરે છેડે દૂર રા રેતિયા શિલાતંભ પર તે છેતરાયેલ ઉભે છે. તેમાં પ્રાચીન ગુમરાજા કંદગુપ્તને ઉલ્લેખ છે. તેમાં પણ તારીખ શબ્દમાં નેધી છે અને તે વર્ષ ૧૪૧ (ઈ. સ. ૪૬૦૪૬૧) ને જ્યેષ્ઠ માસ છે. તેમાંની નોંધ તેનો હેતુ સ્પષ્ટ કરે છે.
“તેણે અર્થાત્ મ (જેનું નામ તે લેખની આઠમી પંક્તિમાં છે) સંસારને ક્ષણભંગુર જાણને મોક્ષ અને સર્વ પ્રાણીના હિતાર્થે અહંતના માર્ગે જેઓ ચાલી ધાર્મિક અનુષ્ઠાને આચરે છે તેમની પત્થરની સુંદર પાંચ (પ્રતિમાઓ )* બેસાડી ખબ પુપાર્જન કર્યું અને ત્યારબાદ ત્યાં એક રમ્ય શિલારસ્તંભ ઉભું કરવામાં આવ્યું કે જે મહાન પર્વતના શિખર સમાન છે અને જે (તેને) કીર્તિ અર્પે છે. ૫
આ પ્રમાણે કહાઉમ્ શિલાલેખ નોંધે છે કે મદ્ર આદિકર્તા અર્થાત્ તીર્થકરેની પાંચ મૂર્તિઓ બેસાડી હતી અને તેની સાક્ષી તે સ્તંભ પરનું શિલ્પ પૂરે છે. આમાં પાંચ નગ્ન ઉભી પ્રતિમાઓ ખાસ અગત્યની છે કે જે ડૉ. ભગવાનલાલ ઇંદ્રજીના મત અનુસાર જૈનેના પાંચ માનીતા તીર્થકરે અનુક્રમે આદિનાથ, શાંતિનાથ, નેમિનાથ, પાર્શ્વનાથ અને મહાવીરની છે.
ગુપ્તા અને જેનેના સંબંધ વિષે આ શિલાલેખના પુરાવા ઉપરાંત ગુપ્તકાળના જૈન ઇતિહાસ પર કવલયમાલાના વિદ્વત્તાભર્યા લેખમાં જે પ્રકાશ મુનિ જિનવિજયજીએ પાડ્યો છે તે માટે તેમને ધન્યવાદ ઘટે છે. જેનકથાસાહિત્યના આ ગ્રંથના કર્તા ઉદ્યોતનસૂરિજે

8. This is a piece of the narrative literature of the Jainas of the eighth century A. D. It was completed in Jabalipura, situated at present in Marwar, though at one time it was considered to be a part of Gujarat.
