मौका पाकर दोनों धूर्त सियार कछुओं की तरफ लपके। खतरा देखते ही कछुओं ने अपने शरीर के अंग-गर्दन, पाँव आदि सिकोड़ लिए और गेंद की तरह चुपचाप स्थिर हो गये। नज़दीक आकर शृगालों ने उन्हें उठाया-पटका किन्तु उनका कुछ भी जोर नहीं चला। शृगाल जाकर वापस झाड़ियों में छुप गये। थोड़ी देर बाद एक कछुए ने अपनी गर्दन और पाँव बाहर निकाले। इधर-उधर देखकर वह आगे दौड़ने को हुआ तभी धूर्त शृगालों ने आकर उसको दबोच लिया और मार डाला। दूसरा कछुआ पहले की भाँति ही अपने शरीर के अंगों का संगोपन (छुपाये) किये रहा। पापी शृगाल उसका कुछ नहीं बिगाड़ सके। एक असंयम के कारण नष्ट हो गया। दूसरा संयम के कारण सुरक्षित रहा।

At an opportune moment the jackals pounced. Seeing the danger the turtles withdrew their limbs and necks inside the shell and became absolutely immobile like a stone. The jackals tried their best but failed to cause any damage or pain due to the hard outer shell. Dejected, they returned to their lonely den and waited quietly. After sometime one of the turtles slowly pushed out its limbs and neck and looked around with an intention to run. The waiting jackals at once pounced, tore the turtle apart and killed it. The other turtle did not push out any of its limbs and so the jackals failed to do any damage. Indiscipline destroyed the first and discipline saved the second.
