पृथ्वी के समान आधार कौन बनेगा ? झाडू की सींकों की तरह उसे बाँधकर रखने वाली रस्सी कौन बनेगा ?
“अतः मेरे लिये यह उचित होगा कि कल सूर्योदय होने पर भोज सामग्री तैयार कराऊँ और अपने स्वजनों आदि तथा चारों वधुओं के मायके वालों को निमंत्रण देकर बुलाऊँ। उनको भोजन कराऊँ तथा उनका यथोचित सम्मान-सत्कार करूँ। फिर उन सबके सामने पुत्र-वधुओं की परीक्षा लेने के लिए उन्हें पाँच-पाँच चावल के दाने दूँ। इससे मैं यह जान पाऊँगा कि कौनसी पुत्रवधू किस प्रकार उन दानों का संरक्षण-संवर्धन करती है।"
3. Once at midnight Dhanya Merchant thought, “I am like a confidante and adviser to many a wealthy citizens of Rajagriha as well as my relatives, in various matters (details as before). But who will be the support of my family, as the earth is of beings, when I go away, loose my position, breathe my last, become disabled, sick, weak, or injured, or live abroad? Who will act like the string of a broom that keeps the straws tied together?
As such, it would be proper if in the morning I make arrangements for a feast and invite my friends as well as the parents and relatives of the four daughters-in-law. Offer them food and due honour. After the feast, I give five grains of rice each to the four daughters-in-law in order to test their wisdom. This way I will know which one takes what care of those grains.” पुत्र-वधू परीक्षा
सूत्र ४. एवं संपेहेइ, संपेहित्ता कल्लं जाव मित्त-णाइ-नियग-सयण-संबंधि-परियणं चउण्हं सुण्हाणं कुलवरवग्गं आमतेइ, आमंतित्ता विपुलं असणं पाणं खाइमं साइमं उवक्खडावेइ।
तओ पच्छा पहाए भोयणमंडवंसि सुहासणवरगए मित्त-णाइ-नियग-सयणसंबंधि-परियणेणं चउण्ह य सुण्हाणं कुलघरवग्गेणं सद्धिं तं विपुलं असणं पाणं खाइमसाइमं आसादेमाणे जाव सक्कारेइ, सम्माणेइ, सक्कारिता सम्माणित्ता तस्सेव मित्त-णाइनियग-सयण-संबंधि-परियणस्स चउण्ह य सुण्हाणं कुलघरवग्गस्स पुरओ पंच सालिअक्खए गेण्हइ, गेण्हित्ता जेठं सुण्हं उज्झिइयं सद्दावेइ, सद्दावित्ता एवं वयासी"तुमं णं पुत्ता ! मम हत्थाओ इमे पंच सालिअक्खए गेण्हाहि, गेण्हित्ता अणुपुवेणं सारक्खेमाणी संगोमाणी विहराहि। जया णं अहं पुत्ता ! तुम इमे पंच सालिअक्खए
