लघु-गुरु का रहस्य चित्र : १७
गणधर इन्द्रभूति गौतम ने भगवान महावीर से प्रश्न कियाभन्ते ! आत्मा गुरु (भारी) और लघु (हल्का) किस कारण होता है ?
उत्तर में भगवान उदाहरण देते हैं एक व्यक्ति बड़ा सूखा तुम्बा लेकर उस पर घास आदि लपेटता है, फिर मिट्टी का लेप लगाकर धूप में सुखा देता है। दुबारा, तिबारा यों आठ बार इसी प्रकार लेप आदि करके सुखाने के बाद वह उस तुम्बे को जल में डालता है तो वह भारी बना तुम्बा गहरे जल में डूब जाता है। जब धीर-धीरे मिट्टी के लेप उतरते हैं तो तुम्बा क्रमशः जल के ऊपर आता है। जब आठों लेप उतर जाते हैं तो निर्लेप तुम्बा अपने आप एकदम हल्का होकर जल पर तैरने लगता है।
इसी प्रकार आठ कर्मों से भारी होने पर जीव संसार समुद्र में डूबता है, नीची गतियों में जाता है। क्रमशः कर्म मुक्त होकर हल्का होते-होते वह ऊँची गति में आता है और सर्वथा लेप मुक्त होने पर ऊर्ध्वगति-मोक्ष में चला जाता है।

Shraman Bhagavan Mahavir arrives in Rajagriha city. His chief disciple Ganadhar Indrabhuti Gautam asks Bhagavan Mahavir, “Bhante! How does a being quickly reach the heavy state (of soul) and the light state (of soul)?"
Bhagavan Mahavir replies, "Gautam! If a person takes a gourd, wraps fibers around it, coats it with mud or slime and puts it in sun to dry; repeats this process eight times and puts this gourd in a water body: the gourd, made heavy with cight layers of fibers and mud, sinks in water. As the layers of mud dissolve in water the gourd starts rising. When all the eight layers get removed the gourd rises to the surface of the water body.
Similarly a being fused with eight types of Karmas reaches the heavy state and sinks to the hell. And when a being destroys the fused eight types of Karmas, it rises to the zenith of the living universe or gets liberated.
