छठा अध्ययन : तुम्बक: आमुख
शीर्षक-तुंबए-तुम्बक-तूम्बा-एक फल विशेष जिसकी ऊपरी खाल सख्त होती है। इसे भीतर से खाली कर पात्र बनाया जाता है जिसको सामान्यतया साधु-सन्यासी काम में लेते हैं। खाली करके इसके मँह को भली प्रकार बन्द कर दें तो यह भीतर की हवा के कारण पानी में डबता नहीं अथवा हल्का हो जाता है। गुरुता-लघुता या हल्कापन-भारीपन आत्मा के संदर्भ में समझाने के लिए यह सुन्दर उदाहरण प्रस्तुत किया गया है।
कथासार-श्रमण भगवान महावीर राजगृह नगरी में आये हुए हैं। उनके पट्ट शिष्य गणधर गौतम वहाँ उनसे शंका समाधान हेतु प्रश्न करते हैं कि आत्मा गुरुता और लघुता को कैसे प्राप्त होता है। भगवान महावीर बताते हैं कि जैसे मिट्टी और घास की आठ पर्ते चढ़ने पर तूम्बा भारी होकर पानी में डूब जाता है वैसे ही कर्मबंधन की आठ पर्ते चढ़ने पर आत्मा गुरुता को प्राप्त होती है और नीचे डूबकर नरक में पहुँच जाती है। जिस प्रकार घास और मिट्टी की पर्ते पानी में घुलकर नष्ट होने पर तूम्बा ऊपर उठकर जल की सतह पर आ जाता है वैसे ही कर्मों की पर्तों का नाश होने पर आत्मा लघुता को प्राप्त कर ऊपर उठती है और लोकाग्र पर पहुँच जाती है।

Title-Tumbae or Tumbak or Tumba is the name of a fruit having a hard outer shell; gourd. When it is ripe it is emptied, cleaned and dried and used as a pot particularly by monks and mendicants. When empty, if its mouth is closed and sealed, it becomes lighter than water and does not sink. It has been used as an appropriate example to explain the terms heavy and light in context with soul.
Gist of the Story--Shraman Bhagavan Mahavir arrives in Rajagriha city. His chief disciple ascetic Indrabhuti puts a question that how does a being quickly reach the heavy state (of soul) and the light state (of soul) ? Bhagavan Mahavir replies, "Gautam! As a gourd, made heavy with eight layers of fibers and mud, sinks in water, similarly a being fused with eight types of Karmas reaches the heavy state and sinks to the hell. When all the eight layers of fibers and mud are washed off the gourd rises to the surface of the water body. Similarly when a being destroys the fused eight types of Karmas, it rises to the zenith of the living universe.
