अनुमान किया जाता है कि यह नगरी रैवतक पर्वत के निकट न होकर समुद्र तट पर बसी होगी। इस विषय पर अनेक इतिहासज्ञों ने विभिन्न मत प्रकट किये हैं। सम्प्रति कच्छ की खाड़ी में एक जलमग्न नगर के अवशेष भी मिले हैं और वहाँ एक टापू भी है जिसे बेट द्वारका कहते हैं। वायुपुराण का यह वर्णन कि महाराजा रेवत ने समुद्र के मध्य कुशस्थली नगरी बसाई थी जो श्रीकृष्ण के समय द्वारका नाम से प्रसिद्ध हो गई, इस नई खोज से पुष्ट होता है। ऐसे विभिन्न वर्णनों से एक संभावना यह भी उभरकर आती है कि किसी काल में द्वारिका एक विशाल भू-भाग में फैला एक महानगर रहा होगा जो रैवतक पर्वत की तराई से समुद्र तट तक फैला हुआ होगा। आज जिन सीमित क्षेत्रों को हम द्वारका और बेट द्वारका के नाम से जानते हैं वे उस महानगर के उपनगरीय भाग रहे होंगे। ___ रैवतक पर्वत-सौराष्ट्र में द्वारका के निकट का पर्वत जो वर्तमान में गिरनार नाम से अधिक प्रसिद्ध है। जैनों का पवित्र तीर्थ-स्थल है क्योंकि वाइसवें तीर्थंकर भगवान नेमिनाथ का निर्वाण यहीं हुआ था। इसके अन्य नाम हैं-उज्जयंत, उज्ज्वल तथा गिरिणाल।
प्रतिमा-यह एक प्रकार का तप है जिसमें आहार की मात्रा तथा आसन विशिष्ट करने के कुछ नियम होते हैं। कौन-सी प्रतिमा कितने दिन तक रखनी होती है इस काल का परिमाण भी निश्चित नियम के अनुसार होता है।
APPENDIX
Dwarka-Important ancient metropolis of the Saurashtra area in western India (Pannavna Sutra). This is not the same as the coastal Dwarka. According to the Mahabharat the Yadavs of Mathura oppressed by Jarasandh left their place of origin and according to the strategic plan of Shri Krishna they migrated to Kushasthali near the Raivatak mountain. Here they constructed a large and beautiful town with numerous gates (Dwars). It became popularly known as Dwarka. In the Gujarati language the word Dwar also means port. As such another inference that Dwarka must have been situated at the sea-coast and not near the Raivatak mountain gained popularity. Different historians have presented different theories on this subject. Recently evidences of a submerged town have been found in the bay of Kuccha; nearby is an island named Bait Dwarka. These recent findings support the story from Vayupurana that King Raivat founded Kushasthali city in the middle of the sea and it became popular as Dwarka.' All these divergent theories give rise to another concept-that in the remote past Dwarka must have been a great metropolis occupying a very large tract of land spread between the Raivatak mountain and the sea. Those smaller areas we now know as Dwarka and Bait Dwarka could have been the suburbs of that great metropolis.
Raivatak mountain-The mountain range near Dwarka in Saurashtra now popularly known as Girnar. It is a pious pilgrimage centre of Jains because the twenty second Tirthankar Bhagavan Neminath attained nirvan here. Other names Ujjayant, Ujjval, Girinal.
Pratima - This is a category of penance where there are some prescribed rules regarding the quantity of food and the posture of meditation. The duration of various penances in this category also follows specified rules.
