Preface

The very popularity of this work has led to the inflation of its text. Many Mss. contain a larger number of verses. Pt. Jugalkishorcji has made an admirablc and pioneer effort to scrutinise these additional verses. Still it is a major problem. It is necessary that all the available Mss. of 'hc Ratnakarandaka should be duly collated and then critical and objective standards should be applied to prove their authenticity: and thus alone onc can hope to come nearer the text of Samantabhadra.
Samantabhadra is undoubtedly one of the great authors of our land; and that is why his works attracted able medieval authors like Akalanka and Vidyananda and post-medieval writers like Yasovijaya and Sadasukha. It is a great asset to scholarship that Pt. Jugalkishore has proved himself the most carnest devotee of Samantabhadra and a critical student of his works. His rigorous methods, legal acumen, depth of learning and steadfast devotion are fully seen in his intensive and extensive study of Samntabhadra's works. His editions of Stutividya (Sarsawa 1950), Svayambhu-stotra and Yuktyanusasana (Ibidcm 1951) are model cditions rich with learned expositions.
