2. Upaśama is nothing but the subsidence of a mentality to adhere to falsehood (Mithyabhiniveśa or an insistence on meanings contrary to the teachings of the omniscient Lords Jina). It is the very first indicator of right-belief. The subsidence of the most persistent form of four great passions known as infinitely bonding (Anata-nubandhi) form of passions is not 'Upaśama' as is widely believed. For the passions (Kaşāya) and quasi-passions (Nokaşāya) are said to be the delusion of conduct and not that of vision or belief.
Therefore, a spiritual aspirant that displays acceptance of the true meaning of the teachings of the omniscient Lords Jina is said to be endowed with the quality of subsidence of falsehood or upaśama of mithyabhiniveśa.
