पश्चिम की ओर आर्य जातियाँ गयी थीं ।।
इन परिस्थितियों में इस तथ्य के सम्बन्ध में असम्भावना नहीं मानी जा सकती है कि या तो आर्य लोग या उनके असुर नाम के बन्धुओं ने सिन्धुघाटी की लिपि का निर्माण किया । वे ही उसे पश्चिमी एशिया और मिश्र में ले गये। इस प्रकार संसार के उन भागों में लिपि के विकास को प्रोत्साहित किया ।
_डॉ० राजबली पांडेय का सुझाव ऐतिहासिक तर्कमत्ता के अनुकूल है : निश्चय ही इस लिपि की उद्भावना भारत में हुई और यहीं से सुमेर और मिस्र को गयी, वहाँ इस लिपि का और विकास हुआ। पर इस सिद्धान्त से भी भाषा और लिपि के उद्घाटन में यथार्थ सहायता नहीं मिल पाती।
सिन्धु-लिपि दायें से बायें खरोष्ठी या फारसी लिपि की भाँति लिखी गयी है, या बायें से दायें, रोमन और नागरी लिपि की भांति । इस सम्बन्ध में भी वैध है-एक कहता है दायें से बायें, दूसरा कहता है बायें से दायें। यह समस्या एक समय ब्राह्मी के सम्बन्ध में भी उठी थी। ब्राह्मी की एक शैली दायें से बायें लिखने की भी थी, अवश्य कुछ अवशेष अब भी मिलते हैं।
ब्यूलर ने ब्राह्मी को दाहिने से बाए लिखने का जो प्रमाण दिया है वह अशोक के येरगुडी (क रनूल, मद्रास) लेख तथा एरण के एक मुद्रा-लेख पर आधारित है। कनिंघम ने मध्य प्रदेश के जबलपुर से उस सिक्के का पता लगाया था जिस पर ब्राह्मी में मुद्रा-लेख दाहिने से बाँए लिखा है । इसे एक आकस्मिक घटना मान सकते हैं और टकसाल के साँचानिर्माता की भूल से ऐसा हो गया होगा। इसी तरह अशोक के लेख में लिखने का क्रम. उलटा मिलता है। येरगुडी के लेख में पहली पंक्ति ठीक ढंग से बाँए से दाहिने लिखी है और दूसरी पंक्ति दाहिने से बाँए । तीसरी बाँए से दाहिने तथा चौथी दाहिने से बाँए । इससे स्पष्ट है कि लेख अंकित करने वाला वास्तविक रूप में ब्राह्मी लिखना जानता था।
