घ-तहखाने के तंग, अत्यन्त घुटनपूर्ण वातावरण के कारण उनको इस (ग्रन्थ) अन्वेषण से विरत होना पड़ा।
ड.--"सूची की एक बड़ी पोथी है और इसको देख कर इन कमरों में भरे हुए ग्रन्थों की संख्या का जो अनुमान मुझे उन्होंने बताया उसे प्रकट करने में मुझे अपनी एवं मेरे गुरु की सत्य-शीलता को सन्देह में डालने का भय लगता है।" च-'वे ग्रन्थ (1) सावधानी से सन्दूकों में रखे हुए थे जो
(II) मुग्द अथवा कग्गार की लकड़ी (Caggar wood) के बुरादे से भरे
हुए थे । यह मुग्द का बुरादा कीटाणुओं से रक्षा करने का अचूक
उपाय है। छ-सूची में और सन्दूकों की सामग्री में बहुत अन्तर था।
ज-"इस संग्रह की रखवाली बड़े सन्देहपूर्ण ढंग से की जाती है और जिनका इसमें प्रवेश है वे ही इसके बारे में कुछ जानते हैं ।"
___ इन विवरणों से विदित होता है कि भारत में प्राचीन काल से ग्रन्थों की रक्षा के प्रति बहत सचेतन दृष्टि थी, इसके लिए स्थान के चुनाव, उसको आक्रमणकारी की दृष्टि से बचाने के उपाय, उनके रख-रखाव में अत्यन्त सावधानी तथा अत्यन्त पज्यभाव से उनके उपयोग की सांस्कृतिक आचारिकता पैदा करने के प्रयत्न निरन्तर रहे हैं ।
___ रख-रखाव की जिस व्यवस्था का कुछ संकेत ऊपर किया गया है, उसी की पुष्टि ब्यूलर के इस कथन से भी होती है :
(93) Wooden covers, cut according to the size of the sheets, were placed on the Bhurja and palm-leaves, which bad been drawn on strings, and this is still the custom even with the paper MSS.553 In Southern India the covers are mostly pierced by holes, through which the long strings are passed. The latter are wound round the covers and knotted. This procedure was usual already in early times554 and was observed in the case of the old palm-leaf MSS from Western and Northern India. But in Nepal the covers of particularly valuable MS$ (Pustaka) which have been prepared this manner are usually wrapped-up in dyed or even embroidered cloth. Only in the Jaina libraries the plam-leaf MSS sometimes are kept in small sacks of white cotton clotbwhich again are fitted into small boxes of white metal. The collections of MSS, which, frequently are catalogued, and occasionally. in monasteries and in royal courts, are placed under librarians generally are preserved in boxes of wood or cardboard. Only in Kashmir. where in accordance with Muhammadan usage the MSS are bound in leather, they are put on shelves, like our books.
