सामान्य पहुंच से दूर स्थानों पर ग्रन्थ-भण्डारों के रखने के कई उदाहरण मिलते हैं। डॉ. रघुवीर ने मध्य एशिया में तुन्ह्वाँङ स्थान की यात्रा की थी। यह स्थान बहुत दूर रेगिस्तान से घिरा हुआ है । यहाँ पहाड़ी में खोदी हुई 476 से ऊपर गुफाएं हैं जिनमें अजन्ता जैसी चित्रकारी है, और मूर्तियां हैं । यहाँ पर एक बन्द कमरे में, जिसमें द्वार तक नहीं था, हजारों पांडुलिपियाँ बन्द थीं, आकस्मिक रूप से उनका पता चला । एक बार नदी में बाढ़ आ गई, पानी ऊपर चढ़ पाया और उसने उस कक्ष की दीवार में संध कर दी जिसमें किताबे बन्द थीं। पुजारी ने ईंटों को खिसका कर पुस्तकों का ढेर देखा । कुछ पुस्तकें उसने निकाली । उनसे विश्व के पुराशास्त्रियों में हलचल मच गई। सर औरील स्टाइन दौड़े गये
और 7000 खरड़े (Rolis) या कुंडली ग्रन्थ वहाँ के पुजारी से खरीद कर उन्होंने ब्रिटिश म्यूजियम को भेज दिये । 'ट्रेजर्स प्रॉव द ब्रिटिश म्यूजियम' में इसका विवरण जो दिया गया है :
___ "Perhaps his (Stein's) most exciting discovery, towever, was in a walled-up chamber adjoining the caves of the thousand Buddhas at Tuahuang on the edge of the Gobi Desert. Here he fou'd a vast library of Chinese Manuscript rolls and block prints, many of them were Buddhist texts translated from the Sanskrit. The climate which had driven away the traders hy depriving them of essential water supplies had favoured the documents they had left behind. The paper rolls seemed hardly damaged by age. Stein's negotiations with the priest incharge of the santuary proved fruitful. He purchased more than 7,000 paper rolls' and sent them back to the British Museum. Among them are 380 pieces bearing dates between A. D. 406 and 995. The most celebrated single item is a well-pre served copy of the Diamond Sutra, printed from wooden blocks, with a date corresponding to 11 May, A. D. 868. This scroll has been acclaimed as the world's oldest printed book’, and it is indeed the earliest printed text complete with date known to exist."'3
सभी ग्रन्थ अच्छी दशा में मिले । कहाँ सातवीं-आठवीं ईस्वी शताब्दी से पूर्व के ग्रन्थ कहाँ बीसवीं शताब्दी ई०, इतने दीर्घकाल तक अच्छी दशा में अच्छी तरह सुरक्षित (Well Preserved) ग्रन्थों के रहने का कारण एक तो दूर-दराज का रेगिस्तानी पहाड़ी

नं० की गुफा थी। इसमें 30,000 वलपिता (Paper rolls) थीं। उन्होंने यह भी बताया है कि स्टाइन के बाद पेरिस के अध्यापक पेलियो आये; यहाँ 6 महीने रहे और बहुत-सी बलयिताएँ ले गये । शेष 8000 पेचिद में रखी गई।
