Our object in making this representation is ito soliçit your attention to that part of the educa. tional policy unfolded in the Despatch of 1854 which bears directly on vernacular instruction and the .cultivation of the vernacular literatures of India. Experience has shown to us that the study of vernacular languages and the enriching of vernacular literatures by means of translations or original compositions can only be promoted by and through the exertions of men who have received a high and liberal education,
7. The Society finds that on account of the paucity of men who have received good high education, no writers can be found, though the Society is willing fairly to remunerate their labours. The following are some of the subjects on which the Society wanted good books and for which it advertised prizes:SUBJECTS.
