चम्पानगरी निवासी धन्य सार्थवाह बहुत-से लोगों को साथ लेकर व्यापार के लिए अहिच्छत्रा नगरी की तरफ जा रहा था। मार्ग में एक विकट वन आ गया। सार्थवाह ने यात्रियों को सावधान करते हुए कहा-"आगे नन्दीफल नाम के विषैले वृक्षों का वन आ रहा है। अतः सभी सावधान रहें यह फल खाना तो दूर, इनकी छाया से भी बचते रहें।"
१. बहुत-से यात्रियों ने सेठ की घोषणा पर विश्वास नहीं किया। जो नन्दी-वृक्षों की शीतल छाया में बैठे, वे मूर्छित हो गये; जिन्होंने फूल सूंघे, फल चखे, वे मर गये।
२. किन्तु बहुत-से समझदार लोगों ने सेठ के कथन पर विश्वास करके इन वृक्षों की छाया से ही दूर हटकर अन्य कम छाया वाले वृक्षों के पास विश्राम किया, वे जीवित भी रहे, किसी तरह की हानि नहीं हुई।

THE FRUITS OF ATTACHMENT AND DETACHMENT

Dhanya merchant of Champanagari was going with many people to Ahicchatra city for business. On the way there was a dense forest. Dhanya warned everyone in his caravan, "We are approaching a forest of Nandi trees. The fruits and leaves and even the shade of these trees are toxic. Therefore no one should rest under their shade or eat their fruits."
1. Many people did not give heed to the warning and took rest under the trees and consumed the fruits. Those who rested under the trees became unconscious, and those who consumed the fruits or inhaled the aroma of the flowers died.
2. Many others who were wise enough to give heed to the warning kept their distance from these trees. They rested under other trees. They did not come to any harm and lived to continue their journey.
