238 ओसिया की प्राचीनता
अब इस बात की अपेक्षा है कि ओसिया नगरी की प्राचीनता का पता लगया जाय। राजस्थान के कई मंदिर गुप्तकाल और गुप्तकाल के बाद के हैं, जिनमें ओसिया के मंदिर भी हैं।
जहाँ तक ओसिया की प्राचीनता का प्रश्न है, उत्खनन में ओसिया में प्रस्तर युग के अवशेष प्राप्त हुए हैं। सूक्ष्म प्रस्तर ओजार (Microlithlic tools) तहसील ओसिया में उम्मेद से दो मील दूर पर मिले हैं।'
जोधपुर में ओसिया में उत्तर गुप्तकालीन मंदिर मिले हैं।'
ओसिया के मंदिरों का शिल्प और दृष्टि अत्यधिक महत्वपूर्ण है । समन्वयात्मक मूर्तियों में ओसिया में हरिहर मूर्ति है जिसमें आधा शिव और आधा विष्णु है। ओसिया में पंचायतन प्रकार के दो हरिहर मंदिर है।'
___ओसिया में कृष्णमंदिरों में वसुदेव के सिर के ऊपर कृष्ण, यशोदा, कृष्ण का अश्व और भैंसों से युद्ध, पूतनावध, कालियदमन, गोवर्धन धारण, माखन चोरी आदि हैं। कुछ दिलचस्प मूर्तियों में बलराम को शेषनाग का अवतार बताया है।

Traces of another stone age, called the Microlithnic on account of the tiny character of the tools used, have been found both on the flanks of Eastern & Western Rajasthan, and such microclithnic culture might have existed in the sarasvati basin Special reterence in this connection, might be made to the microliths urearthed in Ajmer, Tonk, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Pali & Udaipur districts, and they have been brought to light also from Raigarh in Jaipur district,

Of the later Gupta temples existed in Rajasthan may be mentioned,

Among suncretist images attention should be drawn to the Harihara images, the left half of which represents Vishnu and the right half of Shiva. There are two hari-hara temples of the Panchayatana type

The scenes at Osia (Jodhpur Division) include Vasudeva with the baby Krsna on his head, Krsna, Yasoda, Krisna's fight with horse & bull demons, murder of putna, Kaliyadamana, Goverdhan-dharna, stealing butter etc. From the same localty come some interesting images of Balrama which seem to represent him as an incarnation of Seshnaga.
