THE SAKA YEAR 991. 221 BY PROFESSOR F. KIELHORN, PH.D., C.I.E.; GÖTTINGEN. According to the Bombay Gazetteer, vol. XII, p. 478, Vaghli, a village six miles east (or rather north-east) of Chalisgaon in the Khandes District, has three temples, an old temple of Madhâidevi, a small ruined temple to its right, and a temple of the Mân. bhava' sect. “The Manbhava temple, built in Hemadpanti style, 33 feet long by 22 broad and 13 high, with ornamented pillars and doorway, formerly contained a linga, and has still the sacred bull outside. Three large stones (within) bear illegible Sanskrit inscriptions. Near the temple is a well, inside and on each side of which is a small cell. The temple is undoubtedly very old, and has for the last seven generations been in the possession of the Mânbhâva sect." Good impressions of the three inscriptions thus referred to, taken by Mr. H. Cousens, have been supplied to me by Dr. Burgess. They show that the three inscriptions are indeed damaged, especially one of them, but that they are by no means so illegible as they have been reported to be. And their contents appear to me sufficiently interesting to justify my furnishing a short account of them. I shall denote the inscriptions by the letters A, B, and C, but shall show that all three really form part of a single inscription. 4. This inscription contains 14 lines of writing which cover a space of about 3' 6" broad by 1' ू” high. On the proper right side the writing is much damaged and Metre, Vasantatilaka. Really is engraved. w Metre, Sloka (Anushtubh). | the Portal Directory Waghli, " in Long. 76°10/ E, Lat. 20° 31' N. 50 Read चरमधिकं वा. See Bombay Gazetteer, vol. XII, p. 122; Indian Antiquary, vol.
