The museum was established in 1894. The Muscum possesses unique collections representing local, regional, National and International Cultures and Civilization. It is famous for European oil paintings, miniature paintings, sculptures, textiles crafts, wood-carvings Islamic art, Japanese art, Chinese art, Nepal and Tibetan art, Egyptain art, Indian and Foreign coins, science and natural history collections, etc. The museum is also famous for its annual bulletin, picture post cards, monographs and other popular museum publications. Technical Bulletins are also published along with Art Bulletins.
Twenty eight Volumes of the Annual Bulletin have been published. Moreover, ten Monographs have been brought out. Special lecture series and other educational programmes are arranged every year for the educational benefits of students and general public.
The Kachchh Museum, Bhuj :
This is the oldest muscum of the State. It was established in 1877 by the rulers of Kachchh, and was run by rulers of the state before independence. There are at least twelve categories of exhibits and they include sculptures of stone and bronze, paintings, ethnological exhibits, textiles, stone incriptions, hero stones, minor arts and crafts, coins, natural history specimens, musical instruments, weapons, wood carvings, etc. Nearly 20,250 exhibits are in the possession of the museum.
The Lady Wilson Museum, Dharampur :
The museum was founded in 1928. The Museum is situated in the tribal belt. It is noted for tribal art and culture of Gujarat. The museum possesses unique collection of tribal art and cultural property representing Gujarat, India and Foreign countries. It also contains specimens of staffed wild animals, specimens of zoology and geology. It has a special collection of musical instruments, classical as well as folk. The collection of industrial arts from India and Foreign countries are interesting. Nearly nine different categorics of exhibits are on display. In all there are about 8,433 exhibits in the possession of this museum.
Museum of Antiquities, Lakhota Talav, Jamnagar:
The museum was established in 1946. There are five categories of exhibits in the muscum which include sculptures, paintings, folk art, natural history specimens and coins etc. There are nearly 490 cxhibits in the possession of the museum.
Junagadh Museum, Sakkar Baug, Junagadh :
The Muscum was founded in 1901. There are nearly 15 categories of exhibits in the Muscum. They include pre and protohistoric materials, stone sculptures, bronzes, miniature paintings, manuscripts, stone inscriptions, copper plate grants, silver art, glass and porcelain art, folk art, wood carvings, textiles, foreign art and natural history collections, etc. In all, are nearly 34,396 exhibits in the possession of the museum. In all, there are nearly 2,900 exhibits in the possession of the museum.
