________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir Excavation Director, Department of Archacological Survey of India, and I discussed with him this subject. He also agreed with my request and suggestions but he was sorry that there is no provision to gift or loans for the antiques. Building & Budget - Backbone of Museum : Muscuin's first need is collection and secondary should have a separate building to run its function well and satisfy visitors, students and rescarch workers. Many university museums have prestige as cducational institution but they have no separate building. M.S. University is running museology and archacology courses but it has no university muesum, has only one big gallery. Many universitics have only vacant rooms or a big hall can be occupied as a nuseum gallery. (Gujarat has only one universty muscum i.e. Sardar Patel University Museum - ond ycar back got a separate building). It is difficult for a curator to run activities, because sometimes it is used as a class room, work room, exhibition hall, laboratory office ctc. University museum falls in the category of a small museum, attached to a department and dealing with a specific discipline. Budget problem also plays a very important role. Its budget is always slender and unlikely to support the requirements. Programmes and temporary activities in a university muscum is a challenge for any curator. It has limited space and no prospect for expansion, where he may find high density to devclop strong system. Many times the requirements of a curator are neglected like staff, materials, space, laboratory. Many times they have argued that small muscums are not in a position to house high quality. Staff-problems, Curator in Teaching Rolc University museums have combined posts/lecturer and curator posts, and in universites it is becoming more common - often in response to staff cut-backs. Time spent on tcaching commitments will detract from curatorial duties, but the arrangement will be rcconsidered if problems do arise. Many times curators have to convincc a long panel of the heads. (Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Dean, Head of the Department ctc.) If curator wants some changes in the muscum or to do some activity, he/she has to convince all these people. Prospects University muscuin creates learning activities, intelligence, subjective concept and provides the young students with a rich context in which to demonstrate. When students see the original material and personally cngage with it, and are led to think through ideas, information, collect data, test theories and apply their common sense. University Muscum as Computer Educational Center Many universities have their teaching computer centre. So the university museum has good opportunity to develop a computer education centre. It is very useful ulus o Elulzais - ulsel.-4a. Cal., 2009 F3 For Private and Personal Use Only
