Gujarat has the largest number of muscums in India as compared to any othe state. These are located at Ahmedabad, Baroda, Surat, Dharampur, Rajkot, Jamnaga Amreli, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Prabhas-Patan, Bhuj and several other places. Of thes the muscums at Baroda, Dharampur, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Prabhas-Patan an Bhuj are under the administrative control of the Government, whereas those Ahmedabad, Amreli, Bhavnagar and Surat receive grant-in-aid from the Government There are, besides several other museums, which are under municipalities, trusts o Universities. Prominent among these are the Municipal Muscum, Ahmedabad, th Maharaja Fatesinh Muscum, Baroda and the Museum of Antiquities at Vallabh Vidyanagar.
Taking into consideration the large number of muscums in Gujarat and thei distribution from one end of the State to the other i.c. from Bhuj to Dharampur, th Government of Gujarat has established a separate Department of Muscums directl under its own administrative care and control, with a view to reorganizing and deve oping them and popularizing through them a study of Art, Archacology and Scienc besides developing a wide aesthetic sense among students and the lay public. Th administrative centre of this unit is located at the Muscum and Picture Gallery, Barod which is the Principal State museum and the nucleus from which all activities cmanat These museums of Gujarat are silent educators in the life of the community welcoming all who choose to enter their portals and share the beauty of their ra treasures, inviting the great and the small, the young and the old, the simple and th sophisticated - a perennial source of delight and mental stimulation and largely instri mental in awakening the latent curiosity of the human mind.
This small illustrated Guide introduces the internationally recognized Muscu and Picture Gallery of Baroda, famous for its rich and well-organized collections an increasingly used by research scholars and students not only of India but also fro several countries.
The buildings of the Muscum and Picture Gallery, Baroda, are situated in th pastoral enviorment of Sayaji Park, an extensive and beautiful Public park of the cit and are easily accessible is one of the chief factors contributing to the popularity this museum, for even the most casual visitor to Baroda for a day's sight-seeing makes a trip to the museum on his way to or back from the city. Also, the main rou connection the railway station to the city of Baroda fringes the southern entrance of th Sayaji Park, where a bus stop is provided for the convenience of visitors to the Baro Museum.
