The year in this inscription is 17, which undoubtedly represents the 17th regnal year of Kanishka and is to be referred to the Saka era. The year would thus correspond to A D 95. From the available epigraphical data we know that Kanishka ruled for 23 years, i. e, from 78 to 101 A. D. The present image was therefore installed six years before Kanishka's death.
The Kottiya gana and the Vaira or Vairiya Sikha are well known, as they wecor in a number of early Jaina inscriptions of Mathura." But the Santinika or Santinika kula is probably mentioned here for the first time.
