गुप्तकालीन जैनधर्म
यथा:.. There are a hundred or so DEVA temples with about 10,000 sectories They honour principally Mahavira. Some cut there hair off, other tie their hair in a knot and go naked without clothes.. They practice of all sorts of austerties. They seek to escape from birth and death.
[अनुवादः-] करीब १०० मन्दिर तथा १०,००० श्रावक, मुनि, ब्रह्मचारी श्रादि लोग भगवान् महावीर को मानने वाले थे। उनमें कोई केशलुंचन करते थे, कोई नंगधडंग घूमते थे। सभी प्रकार के व्रतो, तपों के प्राचरण के द्वारा जन्म मृत्यु के फेर से छुटकारा पाने की चेष्टा किया करते थे। जैन संस्कृति का यागार माना जाने वाले मथुरा नगर के लोग सज्जन और कुशल थे और धार्मिक ग्रंथों का पठन-पाठन स्तवन, करने में बड़े तत्पर थे। इसके अतिरिक्त बिंबिसार तथा अजातशत्रु के उल्लेखों में बौद्ध धर्म से कुछ-वर सा प्रतीत होता है, जिससे इसी मत की पुष्टि हो जाती है कि वे दोनों जैनानुयायी थे। (७) इतिहास की दृष्टि से महत्त्व --
इम लम्बे प्रवास का वर्णन चीनी भाषा में है और उसका नाम ता.संग-हुमी-उची है। राबर्ट विलने उसका भाषान्तर "Th: Records of the western world." नाम देकर किया है। इस अनदिन ग्रंथ में अध्ययन पूर्वक, विचार-परिपूर्ण तथा महत्त्व की भूमिका जोड़ दी गयी है।
"These records enelody the testimony of independent eye witness as to the facts related in them and having been faithfully preserved and alloted a place in the collection of the sacred books of the country. Their evidence is entirely.
[भाषांतरः----अपनी आँखों देखकर उसका ........। उसी प्रकार मूल प्रति की हिफाजत करके धर्मग्रंथों के भाराडार में उसको प्रवेश दिया गया है। इस कारण उसका विश्वसनीय और प्रबल प्रमाण के लिये उपयोग करने में कोई हर्ज नहीं है। फिर यह ग्रंथकर्ता कहते हैं:
"We find the ample material for the study of geography, history, manners & religions of the people of India."
.[भाषांतर:-भारत की, प्राकृतिक, ऐतिहासिक, सामाजिक तथा धार्मिक विषयों के संबंध की जानकारी बहुत प्राप्त होती है। निरे अनुमान से या अंदाजे से नहीं, बल्कि नीचे उन्हत किये अनुसार जैनधर्म विषयक स्पष्ट उल्लेख मिले हैं।
