________________ Chapter XII Prakrit Verses In Hemacandra's Kavyanusasana Acārya Hemacandra (1089-1173 A D) wrote his Kavyanusasana, a work on poetics and dramatics not " for Jains" only, his own sect, but " for people in general." It consists of the Sūtras, a svopajña vrtti called Alamkara-Cudamani, and an additional svopajña yriti called Viveka (which is intended for advanced students who wanted to be masters of the subject"). Hemacandra cites about 1364 quotations to make the points of poetics quite clear. Of these, about 100 passages are cited from Prakrit works. About 79 of these passages are in verse. In the present study we confine ourselves to these Prakrit verses only-leaving out illustrations of Sleşa based on bhāsa : 1) Bhama dhammia-..... -GS II. 75 (first cited in DHV) 2) Vivariyarae...... -First cited in KP V. v. 137, p. 250, GS (W) 815 1) Kavyānusasana of Acārya Hemacandra, ed. by Prof. Rasiklal C. Parikh and V.M. Kulkarni, pub. by Sri Mahavira Jaina Vidyalaya, Bombay, 1964. This edition of Kavy inus-ā sana and that of Alamkaramahodadhi of Narendraprabha Sūri, by L. B. Gandhi (pub. by Oriental Institute, Baroda, 1942) present the Prakrit text as far as humanly possible, very carefully and correctly in contradistinction to the various editions of the work on Alamkāra-Šāstra. Although the words in Maharastri language do not undergo 'ya-Sruti', Hemacandra seems to have scrupulously followed this practice of ya-śruti' whenever citing passages or verses from Māhārāstri works. At least the MSS read yasruti. We therefore present Hemacandra's quotations with ya-śruti. 2)
