to admit those neutral gathas which do not substantially contribute to the contents of Pravacanasāra. This explains, to a certain extent, his omission of găthās included under the first two groups; but still one desires that he should have retained gāthās like II, *I, 43 *2; III, 17 *1-2, 29 *18-20 etc.
Many early Prakrit gāthās have been followed by Amrtacandra in his works. Some of the gāthās, though not included by him in his recension of Pravacanasāra, are already known to him, as it is clear from the following comparison with the Sk, verses in his other works :
1. Pravacanasāra II, 43 *2 :
edāni pamoa-davvāni ujjhiya-Icālam tu atthikāya tti . bhannamte kāyā punc bahu-ppadesāra pacayattam || Cp., Tattvārthasārał III, 4: vinā kalena s'eşāni dravyāni Jina-pungavarh |
pañcāstilcāyāḥ kathitāḥ prades'ānām bahutvutah // 2. Pravacarasāra III, 17 "1-2:

yā mūrcchā nāmeyam vijñātavyah parigralo eșa? / 3. Pravaoanasāra III, 29 *18-9 :
palckesu a amesu a zipaccamānāsu mansa-pesīsu / samtattiyam uvavādo taj jādīnam nigodānam // jo palkam apakkam vā mamsassa khādi päsadz vā/ so kila nihamadi pimdam jivānam anega-kodīnam // Cp., Purusārthasiddhyupāya 67-8: āmāsvapi palvásvapi vipacyamānāsu māmsa-pes'īsu / sätatyenatpādas taj jātinām nigotānām || āmām vā palcvām vă Ichāduti yah sprs'ati vā pis'ita-pes'īm /
sa nakanti satata-nicitam pindam bahu-jīva-kotīnām || Further some of the gathās not admitted by Amộtacandra are very old ones, for instance: III, 17 *1-2.
uccāliyamhi pāe iriyā-samidassa niggamatthāe / ābādhèjja kulimgam marējja tam jogam āsējja || 1 || na hi tassa tannimitto bandho suhumo ya desido sanaye /
mucchā pariggaho coiya ajhanpa-pamānado dittho 11 % || Pūjyapāda quotes them in his Sarvārthasiddhi (VII, 13) along with the previous gāthā, namely, III, 17 of Pravacanasāra; Akalarka too quotes them in his Rajavārtika4; and they are quoted in Dhavalā commentary5 in the midst of some two dozen gathās only a few of which are traced in Pravacanasāra. Haribhadra also quotes them in his commentary on
