army, heaven as his fortress, Airāvata as his elephant, and Hari as his benefactor, lost battle against the demons (read Rāvana). It is clear, therefore, that own-fate (daiva) is the only protection; self-effort (purusārtha) is futile and contemptible.
EXPLANATORY NOTE In the previous verse (verse 31), the importance of merit (punya) was emphasized. The same point-of-view has been strengthened in the present verse. If own-effort (paurusa) were the only source of attaining the desired, Indra, with such invincible collaborators, could not have been defeated by Rāvana. The next verse clarifies that only the laudable own-effort (pauruşa) has the power to make life worthy for self and for others.
भर्तारः कुलपर्वता इव भुवो मोहं विहाय स्वयं रत्नानां निधयः पयोधय इव व्यावृत्तवित्तस्पृहाः । स्पृष्टाः कैरपि नो नभो विभुतया विश्वस्य विश्रान्तये सन्त्यद्यापि चिरन्तनान्तिकचराः सन्तः कियन्तोऽप्यमी ॥३३॥
अर्थ - जो स्वयं मोह को छोड़कर कुलपर्वतों के समान पृथिवी का उद्धार करने वाले हैं, जो समुद्र के समान स्वयं धन की इच्छा से रहित होकर रत्नों के स्वामी हैं, तथा जो आकाश के समान व्यापक होने से किन्हीं के द्वारा स्पृष्ट न होकर विश्व की विश्रान्ति के कारण हैं, ऐसे अपूर्व गुणों के धारक पुरातन मुनियों के निकट में रहने वाले वे कितने ही साधु आज भी विद्यमान हैं।
