सूरीश्वर और सम्राट् । उच्च कोटिकी दयालुवृत्ति रखनेवाले व्यक्तिके सिवा अन्य कौन कर सकता है ?
अबुल्फ़ज़ल आईन-इ-अकबरीके पहिले भागमें एक स्थान पर लिखता है:
__“ His Majesty cares very little for meat, and often expresses himself to that effect. It is indeed from ignorance and cruelty that, although various Kinds of food are obtainable, men are bent upon injuring living creatures, and lending a ready hand in killing and eating them; none seems to have an øye for the beauty inherent in the prevention of cruelty, but makes himself a tomb for animals. If His Majesty had not the burden of the world on his shoulders, he would at once totally abstain from meat.

भावार्थ:-सम्राट् मांसकी बहुत ही कम परवाह करते हैं। और प्रायः इसके संबन्धमें अपनी सम्मति भी प्रकट किया करते हैं कि, यद्यपि अनेक प्रकारके खाद्य पदार्थ मिलते हैं, तथापि मनुष्य जीवित प्राणियोंको दुःख देने, मारने और भक्षण करनेकी ओर प्रवृत्त रहते हैं । इसका कारण उनकी अज्ञानता तथा निर्दयता है । कोई भी आदमी निर्दयताको रोकनेमें जो आन्तरिक सौन्दर्य है उसको नहीं देखता । प्रायः लोग अपने शरीरको पशुओंकी कब्र बनाया करते हैं । अगर बादशाहके कंधोंपर संसारका ( राजकारोबारका ) बोझा न होता सो, वह मांसाहारसे सर्वथा दूर ही रहता ।"
इसी तरह डा० विन्सेंट स्मिथने भी अकबरके विचारोंका उल्लेख किया है । वह लिखता है:
