अनुमान किया था। यह ग्राम निश्चय से जैन कोशाम्बी है। जिस स्थान पर जैन मन्दिर बने हैं वह अब भो महाबीर के उपासकों (जैनियों) का तीर्थ-स्थान है। मैंने बौद्धों की कौशाम्बी अन्यत्र रही है इसका ठीक २ कारण बतला दिया है । मैं कौशाम्बी के प्राचीन स्मारकों का जैन समाज द्वारा विशेष रूप से अध्ययन किये जाने की सम्मति देता हूं।" जैनियों द्वारा खोज के सम्बन्ध में स्मिथ साहब के विचार ध्यान देने और कार्य में परिणत करने के योग्य हैं। उनकी राय में:--
" The field for exploration is vast. At the present day the adherents of the Jain religion are mostly to be fcund in Rajputana and Western India. But it was not always so. In olden days the creed of Mahavira was far more widely diffuseil than it is now. In the 7th century A. D. for instance, that creed had numerous followers in Vaisali ( Basenti Nortlı of latna ) and in Eastern Bengal, localities where its adherents are now extremely few. I have myself seen abundant evidences of the fomer prevalence of Jainism in Bundelkhand during the mediaeval period especially in the 11th and the 12th centuries. Jain images in that
